Myomectomy

Myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids — which are generally noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. The goal during a myomectomy is to take out symptom-causing fibroids and reconstruct the uterus. Unlike hysterectomy, which removes your entire uterus, myomectomy surgery removes only the fibroids and leaves your uterus intact. 

Fibroids are usually found in or around the body of the uterus, but sometimes are in the cervix. There are three main types of fibroids based on where they are found:

• Subserosal are in the outer wall of the uterus 
• Intramural are found in the muscular layers of the uterine wall 
• Submucosal protrude into the uterine cavity
  

Reasons for Myomectomy

Heavy bleeding is the primary symptom of fibroids. Associated symptoms of fibroids include pelvic pain, pressure, frequent urination infertility, and miscarriage. A myomectomy may be recommended for symptomatic fibroids, which are debilitating or interfere with your normal activities. Other reasons for myomectomy include:

• plans to become pregnant
• possibility of uterine fibroids hindering fertility or contributing to recurrent miscarriage
• intent to retain the uterus

Although fibroids are common, some women with fibroids have no issue becoming pregnant, and continue on to have an uncomplicated pregnancy, while others may face complications. If a woman has fibroids and has been unable to get pregnant or has had repeated miscarriages, treatment for fibroids should be explored — after carefully evaluating for other potential problems.
