What Sets Us Apart?

If you are visiting our website, you are probably seeking expertise in surgical management of complicated gynecologic conditions.  Or, perhaps, your primary care doctor or Ob/Gyn may have referred you to our center for evaluation. It is vitally important for women to understand what it truly means to be a specialist in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery before they commit to surgical management of whatever condition ails them.

I am board-certified in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. That means that I can deliver babies and provide all aspects of obstetric and gynecologic care to women of any age if I choose to do so. However, upon graduation from residency training, I chose to pursue fellowship training and expertise in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Thus, I have not delivered a baby or provided obstetrical care since graduating from residency training.  Can I deliver a baby, yes. But, would you want someone that has not delivered a baby in 12 years to deliver your child just because he/she has been a wonderful gynecologist until you got pregnant? Doubtful. This is the dilemma many women face when they develop a gynecologic problem that requires surgical management. The wonderful doctor who gave them the miracle of delivering their child must be good enough to perform their surgery for problem X, right? This is not always the case. 

By committing my entire career to gynecology and minimally invasive surgery, I am able to offer a far greater standard of care in these areas than a general OB/GYN. The general OB/GYN commits a large majority of their time in practice to obstetrical care - inmost cases 60-80%. That means that only 20-40% of their daily practice is committed to gynecologic care. In most cases, only a very small percentage of that 20-40% is committed to gynecologic surgery.

Surgical expertise is developed by specialized training that is followed up by a high volume surgical practice on a daily basis. Therefore, when choosing a surgeon for a gynecologic procedure, it is critical that a woman research her problem and then seek out the best, most experienced surgeon to treat that problem. Decisions about who is going to perform your surgery should never be based on emotional attachment to a physician who provided exceptional care for a completely unrelated condition.

There are very few exceptions to the fact that all gynecologic surgeries can and should be performed in a minimally invasive fashion. It is well documented that minimally invasive surgery offers less blood loss, less post-operative pain and shorter recovery time than more traditional open procedures for the same condition. In fact, I feel that open surgery for gynecologic conditions in this day and age borders on barbaric. Today, there are experts in minimally invasive techniques for essentially every gynecologic or urogynecologic condition that requires surgical management. Women must seek out these experts in order to receive the most advanced surgical techniques and secure the best outcome possible for any condition that requires surgical management.
