We understand that traveling a long distance to have surgery, especially with a doctor you may have never met in-person, can be a daunting and even frightening decision. This is why we welcome your questions and concerns and are ready to help you do what is right for you.

In an effort to make your decision to seek treatment easier, we have dedicated a portion of our site specifically to patients who have elected to travel from out of state to receive treatment at our facility.

To get started, please provide us with a copy of your previous medical records, including copies of all previous operative reports, including pathology reports. If you are not in possession of your records, please have your doctor send us a copy directly.

Scheduling an Initial Phone Consultation

A simple phone call to our Surgery Coordinator is all it takes to get the process started. Patients can contact the Surgery Coordinator by calling her directly at 423-899-6511 option 2. The Surgery Coordinator is available to answer any questions you have about the practice and will walk you through the process of setting up an initial phone consultation with Dr. Furr. Telephone consults are not covered by most insurance plans however, most patient find the $200.00 telephone consultation fee a more cost effective option than traveling to the clinic for the initial consultation. If you perfer to schedule an in-office consultation our Surgery Coordinator will gladly work with you to schedule an appointment.

Once we have confirmed receipt of your medical records you will be contacted to schedule a date and time for you to speak directly with Dr. Furr, about your case. This initial phone consultation is necessary to help us better understand you and your personal medical situation. It is very important that you are available and are in a location where you have good cell phone reception. At the conclusion of the phone consultation, you will be provided with a personalized treatment plan based on your medical history. If surgical intervention is warranted and you elect to proceed, our Surgery Coordinator will contact you to discuss the logistics of having surgery with Dr. Furr including potential surgery dates, insurance coverage, hospitals, hotels and your anticipated length of stay.

Planning your Visit

Once you've scheduled your surgery, you will need to make travel arrangements and prepare for your time off work. During your consultation, Dr. Furr will discuss your specific recovery timeline with you.  We recommend that you plan for at a minimum two to three-day stay.

Preparing for Your Surgery & Recovery

For your safety and success, advanced planning is critical when traveling for surgery. Luckily, Dr. Furr and his team will work closely with you throughout the planning process. A well-planned surgical and recovery experience can help ensure the process is comfortable, and stress- free for you.

The specifics of your recovery will depend on your elected surgical procedures, overall health, and personal healing ability, though some swelling, bruising, and discomfort should be expected. We will speak with you about proper aftercare and will prescribe the appropriate medications to help keep you comfortable.

Safety & Precautions

In the days or weeks leading up to your surgery, it is important to follow certain pre-surgical guidelines. You will be provided with specific instructions, but here are a few standard precautions to take prior to your surgery:

  • If you are a smoker, it is also imperative to avoid nicotine for at least a few weeks before and after your procedure
  • Cease taking vitamin supplements for around 14 days before and after your surgery
  • Avoid supplements, foods, and drinks that slow blood clotting, such as aspirin or green tea.
  • Cease taking any diet pills at least 14 days before and after your surgery
  • Anyone currently on blood thinner medication should notify Dr. Furr prior to scheduling surgery to ensure proper medical clearence is obtained.

Discuss any supplements or medications you are currently taking, including dosages with Dr. Furr.

It is critical that you openly communicate with Dr. Furr about your health, habits, and lifestyle to ensure a safe experience.

Aftercare

After your surgery, we will take every precaution to ensure your comfort. Soreness is to be expected after your surgery and Dr. Furr will prescribe oral pain medication to manage your discomfort.

We require that you travel with a friend or loved one, particularly if your surgery requires general anesthesia. You will need transportation back to your hotel, in addition to a bit of extra care the first evening following surgery while the effects of anesthesia wear off. We will provide you with detailed instructions for your surgery when you are discharged.

Our goal is to make your travel experience as stess free as possible. Should you need assistance making travel arrangements or have questions related to surgery or travel accomadations our Surgery Scheduler is always available to answer any questions you may have.
